Periodontal Disease

Adult Canine Stem Cell Therapy Available At Kirkwood Animal Hospital

There is a new dental vaccine designed to help your dog's immune system fight off the most common bacteria that cause gingivitis and dental disease. This vaccine will not reduce the amount of tartar that you see on your dog's teeth; however, it does prime his or her immune system to kill the bacteria under the gum line, thereby reducing damage to the tooth roots and surrounding bone. This improves your dog's breath and reduces the number of teeth that need to be extracted. The first time your dog receives the Porphyromonas vaccine he/she will need a booster in 3-4 weeks, and then with the yearly vaccines. The most common side effect we see with the dental vaccine is muscle soreness. This can be alleviated with pain medication, however please contact us should your dog experience soreness.

Below is a copy of Pfizer's Brochure on Periodontal Disease that explains the advantages of immunizing your pet against the most common bacteria leading to Periodontitis.
