Recently, as I traveled through Italy, I found myself listening to a veteran tour guide describing the virtues of Chianti wines. As I listened to her description of the qualities of these wines and the governments requirements of these wines it occurred to me that I was hearing a story similar to that of dog food. For a wine to retain the name of Chianti it must be produced with at least 80% Sangiovese grapes and the wine must be made in a certain region of Italy. So what is the difference in a bottle of Chianti that costs $6 and a bottle of Chianti that costs $60? Both wines come from the same region and contain 80% Sangiovese grapes. You have to do your research! You have to trust the producer. You look for a producer that has been producing a quality product for many generations. A producer with high standards for production, a producer that uses only the best ingredients, a producer that utilizes the best science to pick the grapes at the perfect time. The veterinarians at Kirkwood Animal Hospital often get asked “Which food do you recommend for my pet?” The answer sounds very familiar; we recommend a producer that has been making dog and cat food for generations. A producer that uses only the finest ingredients. A producer that uses trained nutritionists to formulate their ration. A producer that has actually fed their food to dogs and cats and tested the food. These companies are Hill’s Science Diet, Purina and Royal Canin. If you are going to buy expensive dog and cat food, buy from only the best! James Schuessler D.V.M., diplomat A.B.V.P.
